I just got back from my European vacation, where I spent ten glorious days bouncing from Germany to Austria and then Sweden. I didn’t get to shop much in Frankfurt or Vienna, I was too drunk and it was too beautiful, respectively. But I managed to snag these awesome Cheap Monday sunglasses in Stockholm for 200 Kroner, which works out to 25 dollars. Anyway, I’ll be writing more about Stockholm’s shops later this week.

So what’s this little guy up to? Oh nothing, just trying to get from one place to another, but he needs your help. Tweenbots are an art project from Kacie Kinzer of NYU’s ITP. So what exactly is a Tweenbot?

Tweenbots are human-dependent robots that navigate the city with the help of pedestrians they encounter. Rolling at a constant speed, in a straight line, Tweenbots have a destination displayed on a flag, and rely on people they meet to read this flag and to aim them in the right direction to reach their goal.

What’s interesting is that Ms. Kinzer created her Tweenbots as “disposable creatures” that she expected would die before reaching their respective destinations. However, over the course of months of trials, she found that each Tweenbot was able to reach their destination with only the help of strangers. So are people altruistic beings or are people altruistic towards cute, helpless and child-like creatures? It would be interesting to see if this experiment would be as successful if a Tweenbot looked like a Terminator robot. Bobby Solomon of Kitsune Noir brings up some interesting points on why altruism extends to this cute robot but not necessarily to the homeless.

Who knew that such a tiny robot could elicit such deep thoughts?

There is a reason for this, I have recently started a think tank called Omniscience. Getting this company off the ground is occupying a lot of my time. More importantly I’m in the process of turning this blog into a magazine. I’ve recruited another writer and we’ll be focusing on bringing better content to the pages of The Dapper Alchemist. So keep an eye out for major changes and thanks for reading.

Are calculators sexy? This is not a question that most people would think about, unless of course you’re a nerd who engages in calculator modding. But this scene is more about adding bells and whistles than about making the device aesthetically pleasing. Don’t worry folks I’m not judging, I was a calculator modder in my younger days.

The gorgeous calculator pictured to the left is part of the LC-104 series from amadana, which can be purchased from Steven Alan of all places. This calculator focuses on wrapping functionality in a simple and stylish package. The HP 12c is another calculator that embodies this idea. The HP 12c has a timeless design that hasn’t changed in over twenty years. More classic and interesting calculator designs can be found on Pocket Calculator’s Vintage LCD Calculator Museum; it’s a mouthful for sure, but definitely worth a look.

It’s a rare thing when a designer’s aesthetic comprises mathematics, art deco and alchemy, lo and behold Steed Griffin, The Eccentric Cryptographer. His portfolio is a thing of beauty that evokes bygone eras. Steed’s Lesser-Known Polygon series epitomizes the union the arts and sciences, the series’ premise is

that no one knows the names of polygons that have more than 8 sides (or heptagon, the one with 7 sides). Not that this is a crime or anything, I mean, how often do you need to know the name of a 13-sided polygon? But I think there’s something beautiful and pure in geometry that we often miss, even if I can’t stand the math involved quite frankly. I thought there might be something worth pursuing in it. And thus, the lesser-known polygon series was born.

You know how I feel about geometry and mathematics, so I won’t beat a dead horse. Geometry is beautiful and The Eccentric Cryptographer has managed to capture and enhance this inherent beauty.

His work can be purchased at his Etsy store and his portfolio/blog can be found here.

Oh Flickr, why is it that whenever I’m looking for something, you seem to have the answer? While browsing through their vast database I came across the work of autumnomatopoeia designs, a company whose name reminds me of Cap’n Jazz’s Analphabetapolothology. Autumn, the Richmond-based designer behind automnomatopoeia, is quite talented at turning everyday objects into very cute jewelry pieces, but I like her organ-influenced work the best. She translates the shape and form of organs like the liver and stomach into pieces that are both adorable and educational. Autumn’s liver pouch is an especially inspired design, as it not only incorporates the general shape of the liver, but also outlines the various lobes of this organ and highlights the gall bladder with really cute lime green buttons. I’m a sucker for anything made out of felt and for biology, so that definitely makes me biased. But how often can you honestly buy an object that’s both cute and that you can learn from?
